Re: Archer Mine Mining Permit Application
Dear Mr. Biegel:
I am a resident of the Town of Milan, County of Dutchess, State of New York, and a member of Milan Concerns. Milan Concerns is a group of citizens who are deeply concerned about preserving the bucolic character of the Town of Milan and surrounding communities. I formally request an extension of the comment period by sixty days given the impact of the proposed mine.
I am deeply concerned with the potential for a mine to be located in and among a highly residential area of the Town. The noise and dust associated with heavy truck traffic destined to and from a sand and gravel mine will have severe adverse impacts on the quality of life for many residents throughout the Town. Apparently the mine would require heavy truck traffic to travel on and around Turkey Hill Road and Odak Farm Road. These roads are extremely rural and nature and the presence of a large number of heavy trucks would render use of these roads to become extraordinarily unsafe. Finally, the mine is located over an important aquifer in the Town and is surrounded by wetlands, streams and recreational ponds and lakes. Ground and surface water supply and quantity impacts from the mine are almost certain.
The decision of Redwing Properties, Inc. to pursue this permit and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s decision to process the permit are a waste of the State’s resources. It is my understanding that mining is not permitted at the site under local zoning standards adopted by the Town of Milan, and your Department should take whatever steps it can to acknowledge the authority of the Town over this matter.
